Our Doctors

Mandeeps Manage

Dr Matt Klaarenbeek

I am a Dutch GP. As a General Practitioner I enjoy the great diversity of patients and different medical cases. It is important for me to get to know my patients and build on that relationship for the years to come. I am an all-round doctor for the whole family, and have a special interest in skin disease and minor surgical procedures.

I arrived in Whakatane with my wife and two children and we live in beautiful Ohope. My wife, Cynthia, is also a GP. In previous years I have enjoyed working in the rural settings of Africa and in the city environment of Amsterdam. With our young family we wanted to experience the great outdoors of New Zealand and work in an environment with the chance to get acquainted with a new culture and a variety of patients.

Dr Paula Taylor

I am from Cornwall in the UK. I graduated from Peninsula Medical School in 2008 and then went on to train as a GP. My medical interest is gynaecology. I have moved to Whakatane with my husband and 17 year old son and we are loving the warmer weather so far. I enjoying walking, cycling and swimming and we are slowly ticking off a number of the great walks you have in NZ. I came to NZ in my early 20’s and found it hard to leave. Ever since I have wanted to return. Over the last two years we have travelled around looking for a place we wanted to move to. The beaches, sunshine and location of Whakatane made it an easy choice to relocate here.

Dr Vasanthi Bradley

Vasanthi Bradley is Sri Lankan born and immigrated with family to Whakatane in 1973.  She graduated from University of Otago Medical School in 1979.  She trained in General Practice and has enjoyed her work in primary health for over thirty years, working in Australia, Ireland and NZ.  It is now time to come home to Whakatane where she has family.

When not working, Vasanthi enjoys gardening, music and her family.  Intrepid Travel is another love and she has been to many countries on continents.

Dr Sarah Felt

Originally from Colorado in the USA, Sarah moved to New Zealand in 2010. She worked in Taupo initially and moved to Whakatane in September 2012 to work at Phoenix Health Centre as a locum. She liked it so much that she has now joined the group. Outside of work Sarah enjoys running, mountain biking, cooking and travel.

Dr Jodie Ask

Jodie graduated from St Georges medical school London in 1997. After seven years working in the United Kingdom Jodie immigrated to New Zealand. She has been a General Practitioner in the Eastern Bay of Plenty ever since.

Jodie has an interest in family medicine, womans health and family planning.

Dr Jo Petersen

Jo qualified at Wits University (South Africa) and prior to his move to NZ in 1994, he was the Chief Medical Officer of a 50-bed hospital at a remote diamond mine. During that time, he completed diplomas in Tropical Medicine, Public Health, Occupational Health and Health Services Management.

Jo enjoys all aspects of family medicine and has recently completed papers on Travel Medicine and Aviation Medicine.

Jo’s passions are endurance running and travel and these have taken him to fascinating locations, including Mongolia, Chile, Mt Everest, Antarctica, Namibia and China.

Dr Jim McKevitt

Jim graduated from Otago University in 1981. After hospital training in Whakatane, the United Kingdom and Auckland he entered general practice in Whakatane in 1986.

He enjoys working in a supportive family atmosphere at Phoenix Health. He has an active interest in child health, health for the elderly and skin cancer surgery.

Outside of work, he enjoys trying to stay fit on his mountain bike, languages, painting and travel.
