The Doctors Huapai

The Doctors Huapai Medical Centre

Welcome to our practice

The Doctors Huapai is a well established family general medical practice. We warmly welcome our current patients and anyone interested in enrolling with us, to come and visit and have a chat with us. Our great team are here to help with a full range of general practice services for you and your family - GP/Nurse consults, ACC, accidents and injuries, minor surgery, immunisations, mens' and womens' health checks, and a travel clinic. It is our aim to provide quality individual and family health care, with a focus on the importance of a strong relationship between patient and healthcare provider. We are part of a family of practices with The Doctors Waimauku. We are also proud to be Cornerstone Accredited.

We’d like to address the current challenges we are facing at The Doctors Waimauku & Huapai.

As with many other practices in New Zealand's primary health sector, recruitment is a challenge due to a nationwide GP shortage and the growing gap between government funding for primary care and the actual cost of delivering high-quality health services. Rest assured, we are working hard to recruit clinical staff to the practice. This time of year can put additional strain on healthcare services, with the flu season in full swing and Covid still present. Please know that we are actively working to find solutions that will help us offer more timely and urgent appointments.

The health and the wellbeing of our community is our top priority, and we deeply understand and empathise with any frustrations you may have experienced. We are committed to improving the situation and appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.

If you would like an appointment sooner than we can currently offer, we have a great team of experienced GPs available for phone and video consultations, via The Doctors Online. While these are casual appointments and are charged at casual rates, they can help with most medical issues that you might see your regular GP for. Appointments are usually available within 24 hours. Before you book, check our FAQs to make sure your health concerns are suitable for an online appointment - Book Here.

Thank you for your continued support and trust in our practice.

We are currently closed for new enrolments.

Unfortunately, we are unable to take on new patients, and do apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Your healthcare is our highest priority, and we will reopen enrolments when we are able to. Thank you for understanding.

If you need to speak to a GP, we can offer you an online consultation, usually on the same day. With The Doctors Online, you can book a casual appointment and connect with a doctor via phone or video call. Covid-19 Tests & Results
Testing demand is extremely high so we are currently only offering Covid-19 tests to our enrolled patients. If you are enrolled and you have Covid-19 symptoms or are a household contact of a positive case please phone us to arrange your test. Most testing is now done via Rapid Antigen Testing (RATs) with results available within 30mins. You will need to self-report your result via My COVID Record or by calling 0800 222 478 and pressing option 3. The majority of positive cases will be able to self-manage and required to follow current isolation rules. If you have concerns or if your symptoms are worsening, call us on 09 412 9133 or 111 in an emergency.

Repeat Prescriptions

Each GP surgery or primary care practice will have its own procedure for repeat prescribing but the following rules are common to most, if not all. Patients who are well-known to the practice who have a stable condition like asthma, hypertension or diabetes could be allowed to get a repeat prescription for up to six months. Repeat prescriptions are never given to patients who are not known to the practice and there is probably a blanket ban on repeats for narcotics and other drugs that could be misused as doctors are expected to monitor these drugs carefully.

We are happy to do phone scripts for medicines that patients are stable on. There is also the ability to request a repeat prescription for regular medication through our patient portal.

We prefer to see all patients within a 6 month time frame. We will not prescribe this way if more than a year has elapsed since a consultation has taken place. This is a medico-legal requirement. It may be necessary to come in for a consultation with the nurse or Doctor before a repeat script can be given.

In the event you have run out of necessary medication completely and if you are a known patient of ours and the Unichem Huapai Pharmacy, the Pharmacist can issue an 'emergency supply' for 7 days only. You must then ensure you contact us to initiate your repeat script.

  • Allow 2 business days for checking and issuing
  • It is preferable that scripts are paid for when ordered, to avoid a charge at the end of the month
  • We do not email scripts
