We are a provider of primary health care services to communities the length and breadth of New Zealand. We are passionately committed to providing support, care and advice to our communities through our pharmacies, medical centres and community health services. The company supports around 330 pharmacies under the Life Pharmacy and Unichem brands, 46 medical centres, and provides community health services to more than 23,000 clients.
We believe that access to good health care is a right of everyone in New Zealand and we are committed to putting our customers first and helping everyone in our communities to be as healthy as possible.
Our medical centre network started in 1989 with three medical centres in Hawkes Bay. Making access to health care professionals easy and convenient was a founding principle. Also key was the intent to provide convenient, comfortable, integrated health care facilities with a clear mandate to deliver exceptional customer service.
We intend to uphold these principles as the network grows and evolves.
What we do
We support and co-invest in medical centres, offering extensive practice support systems and expertise via our Management Support Agreement (MSA) - see our Management Support for Medical Centres page for more information.
‘The Doctors’ is our main patient-facing brand and we also support medical centres trading under other brands. Each medical centre in the network operates as a separate business, with a range of ownership models such as independently owned by working doctors, jointly owned by Green Cross Health and working doctors, and in some case wholly owned by Green Cross Health. Our preferred model is co-ownership alongside working doctors. We have no preferences or particular affiliations with any Primary Health Organisation or District Health Board.

We work to a set of guiding principles in providing support to medical centres and related organisations. Working within the disciplines of a company structure, our approach is both personal and professional. We aim to:
- reduce administrative burden and simplify a complex environment
- free up centre staff to focus on delivering excellent care for patients and communities
- provide learning and development opportunities for medical centre staff
- maximise the benefits of being a large group and create economy of scale
- advocate for general practice and provide collegial support opportunities
- help medical centres grow through innovation, new models of care and marketing
