Laura Gilding

Laura is a GP who grew up in the north of England and did all of her medical training in Scotland. After 5 years of working as a full time GP in Edinburgh she moved to Gisborne in September 2015 and joined the practice known as Desmond Road Health at that time.  Laura has fully embraced the challenge of a changing model of service delivery from Desmond Road Health GP practice to The Doctors Te Whare Hapara, team approach based on Whanau Ora concepts.

Laura has built up a strong following of  patients in the last year she has been with us.  Laura strives to improve their health and wellbeing through good medical care, education and health promotion. Particular areas of clinical interest include minor surgery, women's health, sexual health, family planning and palliative care.

Interests outside of work include walking, cooking and music. She plays the flute, piccolo and saxophone and plays with both the Gisborne Concert Band and the Civic Orchestra. She has felt very welcomed into the local community and looks forward to staying here long term.

Grace Piper

Grace joined our practice from the UK on 5 September 2016.  She was attracted to work in New Zealand based on her impressions of New Zealand culture and the opportunities for outdoor activities. She enjoys work in general practice and was looking for a practice where she could approach healthcare in a more holistic way.  The Doctors Te Whare Hapara provides her with this opportunity, being a General Practice whose values are based on whanau ora concepts. Grace joins us for at least 2 years and we will most certainly be supporting her to stay longer. She has experience across all specialisations with a particular interest in mental health, gynaecology and minor surgery.

Liza Fairbairn

Liza and her family of husband and their two children aged 7 and 9 moved to Gisborne from the UK on 15 August.  Liza heard about our vacancy after making contact with Laura Gilding via facebook.  Liza has taken a 12 month sabbatical from her practice in the UK to experience a different culture and to work in a different setting.  Liza  and her family have quickly immersed themselves into the Gisborne community and lifestyle.  The family have already visited our beaches and enjoyed a swim and it’s not summer yet! Liza is interested in diabetes, respiratory diseases, Sexual Heath and mental health.  In the UK she is practice lead for respiratory diseases and holds a Master certificate in primary education.  Liza’s experience and skill is certainly apparent after only a month with our practice.
