The Doctors Richmond has 9 General Practitioners, a Nurse Practitioner, a Clinical Pharmacist and 8 Registered Nurses allowing us to provide a full and comprehensive service. We are located in the Warring Carpark on Oxford Street in Central Richmond, Tasman, Nelson. Free parking is available, and our central location makes us easy to find. We are also highly accessible to multiple nearby allied health services, as well as Richmond’s main shopping and business area.

We’ve partnered with trusted online GPs to give you faster access to healthcare, especially when your regular GP is fully booked. These GPs are part of our practice team, not one-off providers. They work closely with your regular GP, have full access to your medical records, and ensure continuity of care. The only difference? Appointments are via phone, making access to healthcare even more convenient.

Monday - Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm for booked GP appointments

We have a limited number of on the day URGENT only appointments which are assessed using a triage system by our nurses via phone call. Please phone us on the day for a call back. 

Closed on weekends and public holidays

If you phone Richmond Health outside the above hours you will be connected to the After Hours Duty Doctor service.

Please note that funding restrictions mean that - a double CSC GP consult fee is $84.50 (as we are only able to claim a subsidy for the first appointment) and DNAs will also incur a full fee ($65)

Standard Payment Terms and Conditions

The Cost of Health Care in New Zealand

Healthcare in New Zealand is a mixture of free and subsidised services, where patients pay a fee to cover some of the costs of providing healthcare services.

Free and subsidised care is only available to New Zealand residents, with exceptions in some cases for visitors from countries like the UK and Australia where New Zealand have reciprocal agreements. Ask our reception team if you think you may be entitled to a funded service for your visit or have any other questions on our fees.

Useful Information About Fees at The Doctors

  • Payment is due the day of consultation or service - prior to your appointment.
  • Repeat prescriptions must be paid for before the prescription is issued or sent to a pharmacy.
  • All fees are based on a single appointment, extended consultations may incur additional charges. Fees may vary due to the time taken and materials used.
  • Medical consumables will be charged separately.
  • Weekends, afterhours and public holidays will incur additional fees
  • Accounts may only be set up with the approval of the Medical Centre Manager.
  • Accounts that are unpaid will be sent to Debt Collection. The debtor (patient) is responsible for all debt collection fees.
  • Normal consultation charges apply to Virtual or Phone Consultations.
  • Newly enrolled patients may require a double appointment for their first visit. A double appointment fee will apply.
  • Four hours cancellation notice for a booked appointment is required. Non-attendance will incur a normal consultation fee.
  • Our practice nurses are skilled professionals and there is a fee when you see them for advice or services.
  • If you have a Community Services Card, you may be eligible for a reduced consultation or prescription fee.
  • If not paid in full an additional $10.00 fee will be charged for all age groups

Prescriptions through the phone line/via reception <14 free, 14-17 years old, $15, For 18+ $22. Prescriptions via the Drs App $19.00. Controlled Drugs monthly prescriptions $12 and Interim Prescriptions $15. Same day prescription $40

Skin Checks (30 minute appointment required) $200 Driver License 74 years  and over (Nurse + GP) $160. Drivers Licence under 75 nurse only $110. Removal of Stitches $25 (Please note this is not included in the Minor Surgery costs). ECG $65. Cervical Smear/HPV self swab non CSC $45, CSC $20 Additional charges may apply for any consumables used. Liquid Nitrogen $15 per lesion plus Dr or Nurse fee. BP Check $25.Home visit $250. Injections including DepoProvera incur a normal nurse fee. 

Nurse issued Medical Certificates $30. Form completion -  WINZ certificates  ($45) , Referrals outside of a consultation $50.

Pay Online

Our practice will email or text your unique Medeor Pay by Link. It will give you access to view outstanding invoices on your account and flexible ways to pay. There may be a small transaction fee.

    The majority of my clinical experience was gained at Christchurch Hospital, with a strong focus on emergency care. Two years ago, I relocated to Nelson, and have been working at Nelson Hospital and at the Medical & Injury Centre on Waimea Road. I have recently transitioned into  primary care at The Doctors Richmond and I am enjoying meeting new patients. I am planning on continuing to expand my knowledge and practical expertise in Women's Health and ADHD in children.

    I am an experienced general practitioner and Fellow of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners who is delighted to have moved to the friendly and welcoming Tasman district in 2023.After qualifying at Otago University in 1990, training at Christchurch Hospital and working in several GP practices in Christchurch, I then travelled and worked in Waterford, Ireland. I would like to acknowledge my gratitude to patients and great colleagues who have contributed to ‘a degree of a lifetime”. My clinical interests include family medicine, natural fertility care and education, paediatrics, crisis counselling and lifestyle environmental medicine. In taking a holistic approach to care, I have been happy to support patients when they prefer to explore  natural medicine options .I have developed a consulting style which aims to listen carefully, and enjoy  those times when we find that touch of humour to brighten the health journey. I am married with two well grown children, and my personal interests include arts and music, gardening and home craft upcycling projects.

    I grew up in Cape Town South Africa and studied at UCT (University of Cape Town) graduating in 2002. After qualifying I spent a year in Anaesthetics and have a diploma in that discipline. However, I decided I preferred the relational side of medicine and went on to work at a district level hospital in KwazuluNatal for many years.  I completed my Masters in Family Medicine while working there, spending time in different departments. I then went on to work in Primary Health Care. I enjoy the variety of my days in general practice as no two patients, and therefore no two days are the same!  My family relocated to Nelson New Zealand mid 2022 and we are enjoying life here. I am married and have 3 children. In my spare time I am transporting and feeding them all! I enjoy food, sunshine and the outdoors as well as a good book!

    Dr Joost van Rens - Locum GP, FRNZCGP

    I was born and grew up in the Netherlands, becoming a GP in 1989. I was motivated to do nonprofit work, and worked the next 18 years in The Hague in a health centre where the patients came from more than 30 countries; mostly refugees and immigrants.

    My wife and I moved to NZ in 2009 after a year in Western Australia where I worked as a roving locum GP. We then lived near Kaitaia, Northland where I completed my NZ Fellowship in General Practice in 2013, while working there as a GP. We moved to Richmond in 2018 because we love the incredible natural beauty of the area,- the snow peaked mountains and the sea,- and appreciate the wide variety of social and cultural opportunities.

    I enjoy the variety of people I meet working here as a GP, seeing every age group. One of my interests is mindfulness,- how to use this to deepen my experience of life, and my work as a GP. In my free time I enjoy fitness training at the gym, swimming and hiking. We participate in the Nelson Tasman Climate Forum: working to help our region move towards a sustainable future.

    I grew up in Christchurch, where I finished my Otago training. After an OE in Britain, my husband and I settled in Lyttelton, where I spent time practicing hospital medicine, before buying a Practice in Motueka. I have worked in Richmond for over 10 years now, and value the relationships I have established here, as well as the ever-changing nature of General Practice. I have also taught General Practice at all levels, and have kept up my thirst for knowledge by a studying a variety of things from Acupuncture, to Neurolinguistics, Masters papers including Cardiology, Ethics, and advanced teaching and learning techniques, and more recently Bio and Neurofeedback. I have a keen interest in mind body medicine and enjoy the opportunity to incorporate this into patient care.

    I completed my medical training at the University of Otago. I then worked in Christchurch public hospital in a number of areas of medicine.
    Following this I moved into general practice. I completed GP specialty training while living and working in Hawkes Bay. Family roots have prompted our return to the Nelson region and we are excited for our next chapter commencing here. I enjoy all areas of general practice, the variety it brings on a daily basis and working with my local community. Outside of medicine I enjoy spending time with my young family and all things sport.

    After completing my medical degree at Guys hospital in London, I worked in Christchurch in the late 1980s and subsequently have almost 20 years of general practice experience, both in the UK and in Tasman (having moved to this area 10 years ago.)

    I have an ongoing enthusiasm for General Pracitice and when not working keep busy trying to keep up with my daughters and springer spaniel dog!

    I came to medicine late in life (30) having previously worked in many fields including building, marine conservation, deep sea fisheries, forestry. I completed my training in 1999 and worked for 5 years in hospital medicine (emergency and psychiatry). I completed my Fellowship in General Practice in 2010 and have been permanently at Richmond Health since 2009. I love all aspects of general practice but have special interests in minor surgery, men’s health and mental health. I’m married with two children and enjoy several outdoor activities (kitesurfing, mountain biking, fishing, hunting).

    After finishing my training at Otago medical school I went on to do general practice training in Southland. This included training in rural GP service which is an interest of mine. I then practiced for several years in Lumsden and Queenstown before moving with my family to the Nelson region. I enjoy the wide variety of experiences that General Practice provides.

Fees

Our CSC consultation fees have been raised in line with the Annual Statement of reasonable GP fee increases 2025/6 which was published in June this year. Non CSC GP/Nurse and Nurse Practitioner fees will not increase at this time. 

There have also been price increases to our non funded services. Please refer to the fee section of this web page. 

Staffing updates

We are delighted to introduce Claudia Huggins our new Nurse Practitioner. Some of you may have met Claudia through her previous role at the Medical and Injury Centre in Nelson.

Claudia enthusiasm for her role is inspirational, and we have had really positive feedback about her care an empathy. We are really excited to have Claudia join the Richmond team.

Dr Asanga Nanayakkara and Dr Laura Matthews will shortly be leaving The Doctors Richmond to commence the next placement of their General Practitioner training. Dr Nanayakkara will be moving to the Wakefield Surgery at the beginning of August and Dr Matthews will be moving to Auckland mid August. We wish them both the very best of luck, and they will be very sadly missed.

Blood test results

Please note that test results requested by The Doctors Richmond are available on the Drs App, which can be accessed via a web browser or on your smartphone/tablet. We do not contact you about your test result if they are normal, or are abnormal but within expected limits. 

Improving Diabetes Care for Better Health Outcomes

At our practice, we’re always striving to improve the health and wellbeing of our patients. This year, as part of our ongoing quality improvement efforts, we’ve identified an important focus area: reducing the impact of type 2 diabetes in our community.

We are using a structured quality improvement model to track our progress and make meaningful changes. Our goals include:

  • Ensuring all eligible patients are screened with blood sugar and lipid tests
  • Recalling patients with diabetes for regular monitoring and support
  • Supporting patients with pre diabetes and type 2 diabetes to achieve better blood sugar control

Behind the scenes, our team is working hard to identify patient needs and is actively engaging in further education to enhance their skills in diabetes management.

Together, we’re committed to helping you live well and stay well.

Prescriptions ordered through the Drs App are cheaper and quicker!  

Please don’t forget to add a pharmacy when you request your prescription through the e-mail (prescriptions@rich.thedoctors.co.nz) or via the Drs App. For urgent requests (within 24 hours) please use the prescription e-mail and add URGENT in the Subject line. Please note that the charge for urgent requests is $40. If you do not have access to the internet or the Drs App, we are able to take a prescription request in person at reception.

Telehealth Appointments

We are currently offering telephone consultations (Telehealth Consultations) in the hope that this will be more convenient for anyone who finds it difficult or inconvenient to come to the surgery.  The appointments can be identitified on the Drs App as Telehealth. If we provide a telehealth consultation but feel that it is more appropariate for you to be seen face to face, we will cover the cost of your face to face appointment with our discretionary funding. If the telephone consultations are well utilised this will be a service that we will look at using long term.  Any thoughts are gratefully received.

Unfortunately if you do not cancel your appointment and Do Not Attend you will be charged a full fee. CSC holders will be charged a non CSC holder fee as we are not able to claim the government subsidy.
