Christchurch is a garden city on the east coast of New Zealand’s South Island, set on the Canterbury Plains. The Avon River runs through the city centre. On its banks are cycling paths, the expansive Hagley Park and the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. Within two hours of Christchurch, you can ski at a world-class alpine resort, play golf, bungy jump, raft, mountain bike, hot-air balloon, wind surf, whale watch and visit internationally-acclaimed wineries and gardens.
In 2010 and 2011, two major earthquakes destroyed many city-centre buildings, and restoration work continues. Christchurch is currently redeveloping the central city area and some of the outer suburbs following the earthquakes. Great progress is being made but this will be ongoing for the next few years to come.
The temperature in summer can range between 18 – 28 degrees Celsius and in the winter can expect to drop down to 2 degrees or lower overnight, with the temperature rising to approximately 16 degrees during the day. Frosts are common which are followed by sunny days. Skiers have the benefit of many ski fields with easy access, some of which are only approximately an hour’s drive from Christchurch. Climbing, tramping (hiking and hill walking) opportunities are also plentiful. Christchurch offers many beautiful parks and hills which are used by mountain bike enthusiasts, runners and walkers. Located on the coast, we enjoy ready access to several beaches the most popular of which is Sumner. We are well provided with churches, libraries, shopping malls, cafes and restaurants in our area.
Christchurch South Health is located in the south-east area at the base of the Cashmere Hills approximately five minutes by car to the central city and 20 minutes from the Christchurch Airport. Christchurch International Airport services routes to many international destinations. The domestic terminal offers direct flights to most New Zealand centres. A train service travels to the West Coast and north towards Kaikoura and Marlborough together with numerous bus routes both to the north, south and west. By road Christchurch is approximately two hours from Kaikoura, four hours from Marlborough, 2-3 hours from The West Coast and four hours from Dunedin.
Motueka is the second largest centre in the Tasman Region with a population of approximately 7,000. About 10–15,000 people live in the town and hinterland. Motueka, as one of the nearest towns to the Abel Tasman and Kahurangi National Parks, has become the base of many tourism ventures in those parks, as well as in Nelson Lakes National Park, and in other recreational areas. A wide range of services and shops line the main street of Motueka.
The surrounding district has a number of orchards, as well as growing a variety of specialised crops such as hops, and formerly serving as the main centre of tobacco growing in New Zealand. A number of small vineyards have developed in recent years. Nearby beaches (such as Kaiteriteri Beach and Marahau) are very popular with holidaymakers, and the area around Motueka has one of the country's highest annual sunshine-hour indices. Many artists live in the area around Motueka, especially potters and musicians.
Extensive limestone cave systems (including Harwood Hole in the Takaka Hill area north of Motueka) attract cavers and rock climbers. Sea kayaking and tramping now attract many thousands of visitors each year. The Tasman Great Taste Trail, a recently completed cycle trail links Motueka to Nelson and Richmond to the east, Marahau to the north west, as well as inland to the south through the Motueka and Pigeon Valley. Motueka enjoys a warm, sunny climate with moderate rainfall
Regular passenger services run from Nelson Airport to the three main air hubs of Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch, and from there to other parts of New Zealand. By road, Motueka is a 25 minute drive to Nelson, 45 minute drive to Kaiteriteri Beach and 25 minutes to Abel Tasman National Park.
