At The Doctors Te Whare Hãpara we've have a friendly and dedicated team of medical professionals with a wide range of skills, experience and professional interests. There have been a few changes in our team so we want you to get to know us a little better.  This great team provides consistent high quality general practice services to all our valued patients.

All of our GP team are NZ registered with full qualifications, plus we have new GPs with international experience joining us. This enables us to provide a greater range of treatments and service when you visit. Each of our doctors has special areas of interest and expertise, so it will be easier for your doctor to get extra information and advice for you when you need it.

We’re providing our service in a new way to ensure you and your whanau remain safe. We're doing our part to support the COVID-19 response so when you phone us or visit the clinic we will ask if you have any cough, cold, or flu-like symptoms or if you're concerned about COVID-19 - let us know. This doesn't mean we think you have coronavirus, it's simply a small step we're taking to ensure we continue to keep our community safe and healthy.

Our practice is safe to visit

Safety is our priority. We are doing testing for COVID-19 and it's done in your car where possible or in an isolation room if an assessment is required.

This means when you visit us for other medical issues you won’t be exposed in any way. We have strict infection prevention standards in place, meaning staff are regularly wiping surfaces and keeping the practice clean and germ-free.

Thanks for your patience and continued support.

    Dr Laura Gilding

    GP Lead

Laura is a GP who grew up in the north of England and did all of her medical training in Scotland. After 5 years of working as a full time GP in Edinburgh she moved to Gisborne in September 2015 and joined the practice known as Desmond Road Health at that time.  Laura has fully embraced the challenge of a changing model of service delivery from Desmond Road Health GP practice to The Doctors Te Whare Hapara, team approach based on Whanau Ora concepts.

Laura has built up a strong following of  patients in the last year she has been with us.  Laura strives to improve their health and wellbeing through good medical care, education and health promotion. Particular areas of clinical interest include minor surgery, women's health, sexual health, family planning and palliative care.

Interests outside of work include walking, cooking and music. She plays the flute, piccolo and saxophone and plays with both the Gisborne Concert Band and the Civic Orchestra. She has felt very welcomed into the local community and looks forward to staying here long term.

  • Dr Grace Piper

    Dr Grace Piper

    MB ChB FRNZCGP

Grace joined our practice from the UK on 5 September 2016.  She was attracted to work in New Zealand based on her impressions of New Zealand culture and the opportunities for outdoor activities. She enjoys work in general practice and was looking for a practice where she could approach healthcare in a more holistic way.  The Doctors Te Whare Hapara provides her with this opportunity, being a General Practice whose values are based on whanau ora concepts. Grace joins us for at least 2 years and we will most certainly be supporting her to stay longer. She has experience across all specialisations with a particular interest in mental health, gynaecology and minor surgery.
