The Doctors Whangaparāoa is a long-established general practice serving the Whangaparāoa community for over 25 years and we continue to provide high-quality medical care for you and your family’s health care needs. We are located on the corner of Whangaparāoa Rd and Karepiro Dr in Stanmore Bay.  

Our team are very approachable and take pride in delivering our patient-focused professional medical services. Our purpose built medical facility expresses our principles well. Covid-19 Tests & Results
If you have Covid-19 symptoms or are a household contact of a positive case please phone us to arrange your test. Most testing is now done via Rapid Antigen Testing (RATs) with results available within 30mins. You will need to self-report your result via My COVID Record or by calling 0800 222 478 and pressing option 3. The majority of positive cases will be able to self-manage and required to follow current isolation rules. If you have concerns or if your symptoms are worsening, call us on 09 424 3001 or 111 in an emergency.

Certified Tests for Travel & Pre-Employment
Unfortunately, our clinic does not offer certified proof of a negative COVID-19 RAT or PCR test result for international travel or pre-employment.

Consults
Many consults are virtual (phone or video), with some in person. Phone 09 424 3001 to book and tell us if you have any Covid-19 symptoms. We will explain what to do when coming into the practice. Please wear a mask at all times.

Paper Enrolment

Paper enrolment forms are still available if you're not able to complete the online form. For each person enrolling, simply print and complete:  the Enrolment Form, an Adult or Child Medical Questionnaire, read and accept our standard payment terms and conditions and email all files to reception@wh.thedoctors.co.nz including a copy of your suitable identification

Contraceptive advice

Our doctors and nurses are able to discuss and cater for most of your contraceptive needs:

  • Oral contraceptives
  • Depo Provera injections
  • IUCD (intra uterine contraceptive device) - this includes Copper, Mirena and Jaydess

Family Planning

Your GP can advise you on all aspects of family planning.

Cervical Screening aged 20-69yrs

You have the choice for a nurse or GP to do this for you at a time that suits you. This can include sexual health screening.

Breast Screening from age 40yrs - funded mammograms age 45-69yrs

Best practice recommends you get your breasts checked with your GP prior to your mammogram.

Early pregnancy

Consult your GP for early pregnancy care under 12 weeks gestation. Also see our services through Circle Maternity.

Menopause

Discuss with your GP how to manage your menopause.

Dont Assume You're Immune. If your teen is about to leave school, now is a good time to check they are up to date with their immunisations before they move onto work, further education or travel. Visit the website getimmunised.org.nz for more information.

HPV vaccination:

From the 1st of January 2017, HPV (Human Papillomavirus Vaccine) immunisation will be funded for everyone aged 9 – 26 (inclusive) including boys and young men. The HPV vaccination is a course of 3 injections and is free if the 1st injection is prior to the 27th birthday. The HPV vaccine will be offered to boys and girls as part of the school based programme in Year 8 around the age of 12. HPV immunisation will be available and free through general practices from 9 years of age through to age 26. 

HPV viruses are common and cause skin and mucous membrane infection. 4 out of 5 people are infected with HPV during their lifetime usually within the first 2 years of commencing sexual activity. HPV viruses can lead to diseases such as genital warts and HPV related cancers such as cervical, vulval and vaginal cancer, penile cancer and cancers of the tongue and oropharynx.

Minor Surgery

Many conditions do not need to be referred to a specialist or hospital. We offer fast and competent removal and biopsies of skin lesions, lumps and bumps. Other services include removal of benign moles and skin tags and ingrown toenail surgery.

Repeat Prescriptions

Please allow 2 working days for all repeat prescriptions.

All medication is checked by your doctor prior to being released. Clinical reviews of your medications are essential and in the best interests of your health.

PRICE – $26.00 ($18.00 for Community Services Cardholders)

There will be an additional $10 charge on prescriptions requested for same day or short notice collection.

Urgent Prescriptions requested after 3pm on a Friday WILL NOT be available until the following week.

We offer a service to support pre and existing diabetics.
A diabetic nurse consultation costs $50.00, but some patients are eligible for a subsidy.

This is a thorough medical check up in combination with a nurse and your doctor, looking at health concerns and general wellness. Allow 45 minutes for this appointment.

The Cost of Health Care in New Zealand

Healthcare in New Zealand is a mixture of free and subsidised services, where patients pay a fee to cover some of the costs of providing healthcare services.

Free and subsidised care is only available to New Zealand residents, with exceptions in some cases for visitors from countries like the UK and Australia where New Zealand have reciprocal agreements. Ask our reception team if you think you may be entitled to a funded service for your visit or have any other questions on our fees.

Useful Information About Fees at The Doctors

  • Payment is due the day of consultation or service - prior to your appointment.
  • Repeat prescriptions must be paid for before the prescription is issued or sent to a pharmacy.
  • All fees are based on a single appointment, extended consultations may incur additional charges. Fees may vary due to the time taken and materials used.
  • Medical consumables will be charged separately.
  • Weekends, afterhours and public holidays will incur additional fees
  • Accounts may only be set up with the approval of the Medical Centre Manager.
  • Accounts that are unpaid will be sent to Debt Collection. The debtor (patient) is responsible for all debt collection fees.
  • Normal consultation charges apply to Virtual or Phone Consultations.
  • Newly enrolled patients may require a double appointment for their first visit. A double appointment fee will apply.
  • Four hours cancellation notice for a booked appointment is required. Non-attendance will incur a normal consultation fee.
  • Our practice nurses are skilled professionals and there is a fee when you see them for advice or services.
  • If you have a Community Services Card, you may be eligible for a reduced consultation or prescription fee.
  • If not paid in full an additional $10.00 fee will be charged for all age groups

Pay Online

Payment is due on the day of your appointment. A $10 late fee applies to outstanding accounts if not paid within 5 days.

In addition to paying online or in person, you can contact us to make a credit card payment over the telephone.

    Our Health Coach (HC) is a registered health professional who has the knowledge and skills to help you with:

    • Managing conditions like diabetes, asthma, gout and high Cholesteron
    • Eating habits and/or exercise
    • Becoming smokefree or reducing smoking
    • Understanding your medications
    • Connecting you with the right social agency to help with things like housing, budgeting, WINZ, food and social connection

    Your Health Coach will help you set goals and make action plans to improve your health.  This is a service offered free of charge by The Doctors, Whangaparāoa.

    Ask your doctor or nurse for an appointment with our Health Coach.

    Health Improvement Practitioner Andrea Smith

    This is a service offered free of charge by The Doctors, Whangaparāoa.  

    Our Health Improvement Practitioner (HIP) is a registered health professional who has the knowledge and skills to help you with:

    • Stress
    • Sleep
    • Anxiety, depression or feeling down
    • Coping with physical health challenges
    • Drug or alcohol concerns

    Your doctor may recommend seeing the Health Improvement Practitioner.  A brief session of up to 30 minutes which will focus on practical strategies to support you with your wellbeing straight away and linking you with external services if needed. 

  • Nurse Practitioner Pip Harpur

    Nurse Practitioner Pip Harpur

    Pip is our Matanga tapuhi Nurse Practitioner. Nurse Practitioners have the same authority as a Doctor, bringing the best of nursing and medicine together to support patients and whanau. She is an experienced Nurse Practitioner in both the acute / primary health settings here in New Zealand and overseas. She has a special interest in older people’s health and palliative care. Pip has lived on the Hibiscus Coast for many years with her husband and has 5 adult children and 6 grandchildren. She is a passionate gardener and enjoys tramping with her family.

    General Practitioner

    Susi trained in London, qualifying from King’s College School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1993.

    She has worked in General Practice in the UK (Devon and Wiltshire) for many years. Susi moved to New Zealand with her family in 2005, and lives in Orewa with her husband and 2 sons.

  • Dr Clare Hookings

    Dr Clare Hookings

    General Practitioner, Vocationally Registered

    Clare has lived on the Hibiscus Coast since 2005 with her husband and two sons.

    She graduated with a Diploma in Obstetrics from the Auckland Medical School and went on to work in general practice in West Auckland. Following this Clare continued in general practice on the North Shore for 17 years where she continued to develop her love for providing family-centered health care. On her days off Clare enjoys being in the outdoors, especially the bush and the beautiful beaches in the area and is also keen on conservation issues.

    Dr Minet van Zyl

    General Practitioner

    Minet is South African but did work in Rotorua previously for seven years before returning to her native country to run her own practice for ten years. She now lives in Manly with her husband and three children. Her hobbies are reading, cooking and cycling. Minet is a very experienced and knowledgeable GP and is great with patients.

  • Dr Catherine Ripley

    Dr Catherine Ripley

    General Practitioner, Vocationally Registered

    Dr Catherine Ripley has been a resident on the Hibiscus Coast since 1994 when she came to work at The Doctors Whangaparaoa.

    She has 3 children and her husband is a Nurse Specialist. Catherine has also had time overseas working in the Kingdom of Tonga and having a year in Canada. She loves being a family GP and being a part of the team here at The Doctors Whangaparaoa.

  • Dr Caleb Goh

    Dr Caleb Goh

    General Practitioner, Vocationally Registered

    Dr. Caleb Goh joined The Doctors Whangaparaoa in June 2020. He was born in New Plymouth and grew up in Malaysia, returning to study in Dunedin at the University of Otago Medical School in 2010.

    He now lives on the North Shore with his wife and family.  He has worked in various specialties mostly at Auckland, North Shore and Waitakere hospitals and holds a Clinical Diploma in Palliative Medicine and a Postgraduate Certificate in Health Sciences (Women's Health).  Outside of doctoring and coping with (and enjoying) his young children, he enjoys music, keeping fit and all things food related.

Farewell Dr Ellen Martyn

Ellen joined our practice in Dec 2022 and has been a valuable member of our team since. We wish her all the best as she plans to return to her home country Ireland with her husband in preparation of the arrival of their baby. We have enjoyed having Ellen as part of our team and will be missed.
