Dr Katherine Martin MBBS, DRCOG, MRCGP from Howick House Medical discusses the importance of taking medication correctly. This article featured in Eastlife magazine, 2016.
Did you know that a third of us do not take a course of antibiotics as they are prescribed? More startling is that more than half of us do not take long-term medication as we should. This figure increases if the condition being treated does not have symptoms such as high blood pressure or raised cholesterol. It is very important to tell your doctor if you have stopped taking your medication. Experiencing side effects is a common reason for not taking medication. There is often a different medicine that will agree with you and won’t result in side effects.
It is important that you know why you are taking each medication – your pharmacist or doctor will be able to tell you if you are not sure. It is also easy to become muddled if taking more than one or two medications. But, fortunately, it is possible to have tablets packaged in a blister pack by the pharmacist. This makes it easy to taking the right amount of tablets and the right time of day. Once tablets have been dispensed by the pharmacist they cannot be re-used so tablets not consumed across the whole of New Zealand is very costly to the health service.
With Christmas fast approaching can I remind everyone taking regular medication to ensure they have enough to last throughout the holiday period. If you know or think you may fall short, order a repeat prescription well in advance so that your surgery has time to issue it.
