Immunisations - childhood to adult

The Doctors Fred Thomas nurses are all certified vaccinators.

The National Immunisation Schedule outlines the free vaccinations for babies, children, adolescents and adults. See the website National Immunisation Schedule for more details.

All infants have their 6 week, 3 and 5 month immunisations with the nurse and included is an additional health check with the doctor. 15 month and 4 year child immunisations are with the nurse only.

HPV vaccination:

From the 1st of January 2017, HPV (Human Papillomavirus Vaccine) immunisation will be funded for everyone aged 9 – 26 (inclusive) including boys and young men. The HPV vaccination is a course of 3 injections and is free if the 1st injection is prior to the 27th birthday.  The HPV vaccine will be offered to boys and girls as part of the school based programme in Year 8 around the age of 12. HPV immunisation will be available and free through general practices from 9 years of age through to age 26.

The Doctors at Fred Thomas health are committed to this program and will be contacting eligible patients over the next 12months.

HPV viruses are common and cause skin and mucous membrane infection. 4 out of 5 people are infected with HPV during their lifetime usually within the first 2 years of commencing sexual activity. HPV viruses can lead to diseases such as genital warts and HPV related cancers such as cervical, vulval and vaginal cancer, penile cancer and cancers of the tongue and oropharynx.

Circle Maternity

In July 2015 we have launched an exciting new offer known as Circle Maternity. The GP, midwife, and where appropriate a specialist obstetrician, work together to support a woman's pregnancy. Together they form a circle of care.

Fred Thomas Health provides the GP care, Kate Sheppard Midwifery provides the midwife care, and Beginnings, provides the specialist care.

There are 2 options to choose from. The Primary Circle offers care by a midwife and GP together, and if necessary a specialist obstetrician. The Specialist Circle involves care by all three, with the specialist overseeing the pregnancy. Circle Maternity is based out of Fred Thomas Health in Takapuna.

For more information call Kate Sheppard midwives on 09 489 1437 or visit their website. You can also call Fred Thomas Health on 09 972 9020.
